Creation, as portrayed in various cultural narratives, is often depicted as the result of a divine command. In Ovid’s “The Metamorphoses,” a deity shapes the earth, while in Genesis, God brings vegetation into existence. This timeless theme of creation is brought to life in Santi Moix’s latest exhibition at the Sala de Armas of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Eivissa (MACE).

Moix, born in Barcelona in 1960, presents an installation that symbolizes birth and a vegetal paradise, intricately referencing the native flora of Ibiza. This genesis of the island’s nature features intertwined stems of flowers and plants, bursting with vibrant colors, embodying an allegory of the primordial act of creation.

His exhibition, “La costa dels mosquits. Una antològica (1998-2022),” previously showcased at the Fundació Vila Casas, highlights lush paintings with botanical themes. These works strive to create forms that parallel reality, diverging from strict naturalism. Particularly notable are his pencil and charcoal drawings of Menorca, characterized by their chromatic restraint and detailed mannerism, capturing a melancholic, weathered landscape.

At MACE, Moix employs Tyvek fabric for his layered pictorial compositions, achieving a unified expression. This immersive approach allows visitors to feel integrated into the recreated paradise, based on the local flora that Moix meticulously studied and depicted. His dedication to natural reality underscores his commitment to environmental preservation and his reverence for the beauty and fragility of nature.

Moix’s installation at MACE offers a deeply engaging experience, highlighting nature as a profound source of inspiration and emphasizing the symbolism of each plant and flower. Through his detailed observation of the Ibizan landscape, Moix captures its essence, transforming it into art that celebrates the vibrancy and resilience of life and nature.
